REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The national strategy and Yogyakarta's economic program will focus on developing tourism and the creative industry, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated here on Thursday.

"I believe the tourism and creative industries will help the economy to flourish because the two sectors have relied on innovation and technological developments," Jokowi noted in his opening speech at a limited meeting in Jakarta.

Assisted by Coordinating Minister of Economy Darmin Nasution, Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, and Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, the president opened today's meeting that evaluated the implementation of the national strategic project and priority program in Yogyakarta Province.

Apart from the three ministers, today's meeting was also attended by Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Research and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir, Minister of Land and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil, Deputy of Economic Minister Mardiasmo, State Secretary Pratikno, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.

Jokowi further stated that the quality of human resources remains the key to improving the two service industries. "We have to not only strengthen the physical infrastructure but also the cultural and social sectors," the president remarked.

Hence, the shortage of natural resources in some provinces could be tackled by developing the two service industries.

According to the statistic bureau's record, Yogyakarta was named the country's top destination last year.

The number of tourist arrivals to the province had significantly increased by around 130.36 percent during the 2015-2016 period.
