REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- The people of West Seram Regency were taken by surprise at the sight of a stranded whale at the Kepala Lobang Beach, Huamual Belakang District.
The giant ocean mammal was first discovered alive but later died, according to a statement made by the regional military command XVI/Pattimura on Tuesday.
Sharir, a 34-year-old local fisherman, was the first to spot the stranded whale.
The fisherman was checking his speedboat on the coast when he heard the sound of a large object spouting water.
Sharir then moved to take a closer look before he found that it was a whale. He informed the other villagers of the finding to help him push the whale into the sea.
However, due to its large body, the mammal eventually died since it had been stranded for long at the beach.
Based on the examination of the military personnel, the whale, measuring 23 meters in length and four meters in width, died due to the movements of ships that often sail through these waters and the bad weather that hit Maluku lately, which affect marine life, including whales.
Moreover, the whale was fairly old due to which it was easily dragged by the waves up to the beach.
The rare incident is the second of its kind after a whale was found stranded at Iha Beach village, Huamual District, Seram Barat Regency, some time ago.
