REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Transportation is planning to propose to the House the issuance of an intermodal transportation law to regulate the movements of homecoming travelers using motorcycles.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in Jakarta on Tuesday motorcycle is a favorite vehicle for homecoming travelers because there is no adequate transportation means in their villages or districts.
"There is something we have to think with regard to the homecoming post-fasting Eid al-Fitr, or Lebaran travelers this year. That is how to design a multi mode transportation for homecoming travelers. We have coordinated with the House of Representatives (DPR) on the drafting of a law on intermodal transporation," the minister said.
He said that the draft of the law has not yet been made, but his ministry has already coordinated with the House, notably Commission V (on transportation affairs) regarding the plan.
The minister said that the connectivity capacity of the existing intermodal transportation should be increased so that travelers could have connections beginning from national lanes, provincial roads to district or subdistrcit routes.
In the law, the provincial and district governments should prepare transportation modes from large cities to sub-districts and villages so that the use of motorcycles during the Lebaran season by travelers could be reduced.
"Motorcycles become a favorite vehicle because they face problems when they arrive in villages where transportation means do not exist," the minister added.
He said that urban transportation modes have different types with which we can think how to support the MRT, LRT and their feeders. "We should produce a law on it," he said.
