REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu stated malware attacks could threat a national security.

"The world is also facing ransomware, a new malware threat which is currently popular. Ransomware is a malware which is designed specifically to extort users or owners of data saved in their computer by locking access to certain computers and files, and then (the perpetrator) asks for some money to allow the malware to give access," he said when speaking at the 1st Indonesia International Defense Science Seminar in Sentul, West Java province on Wednesday.

He said the malware attack caused great frustration because the computer users cannot access their data.

"For anyone, any business, personal or government entity, ransomeware is very harmful because it disturbs the entire performance of the organization and the bureaucracy," he explained.

As the ransomware attacked very important files, he said, the computer users inevitably must pay a fine of money so the attack could caused economic losses.

"If the ransomware is modified to be able to peek at the contents of the file, it will be very dangerous and can affect national security as it attacks a computer that contains important information of a state," he stated.

Therefore, he said there is a need for collaboration between a number of countries to fight the entry of the malicious software.

"This attack is a common enemy, so there must be cooperation with many countries to dispel cyber attacks," he said.
