REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The police have destroyed 1.4 tons of methamphetamine and 1.2 million ecstasy pills, which were seized in various narcotics cases, using an incinerator at the Angkasapura Garbage Plant, Soekarno Hatta Airport, in Tangerang, on Tuesday.
"The destruction is aimed at showing the transparency of the police and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN)," Director for Drugs Crime of the police' Criminal Investigation Unit Brigadier General Eko Daniyanto said.
The evidences were seized from 36 suspects in various drugs case, involving nine foreigners.
Meanwhile, BNN chief Commissioner General Budi Waseso noted that the destruction of the evidence in drug cases has shown the performance of the police, BNN, and customs joint team.
Budi noted that strong coordination of all parties is needed to tackle drug cases. "It cannot be handled by the police, BNN, and customs office alone, but by all elements of the society."
Destruction of the drugs, which comprised of 2.73 tons of marijuana; 1.405 tons of methamphetamine; 1,264,445 ecstasy pills; 36,010 happy five pills; and 5,595,614 pills of other psychotropic substance, were also conducted by other provincial police.
During Jan to July period, the joint team has seized 73.01 tons of marijuana; 1.771 tons of methamphetamine; 1,901,834 ecstasy pills; 189.97 grams of heroin; 7.64 grams of cocaine; and 55,146 happy five pills.
The team has also named 27,432 suspects in various drugs cases during the period.
During the occasion, the police inaugurated 1 thousand anti-drugs ambassadors, comprised of pilots, stewards, and stewardesses from some airlines.
