REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Marine and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti reminds regional administrations of the necessity of sea zonation to ensure sustainable management of the marine and fisheries sector.

"It is time for provincial administrations having coastal areas to address themselves to arranging their sea zones," the minister said in a written statement here on Monday.

She said the purpose of arranging the management of coastal areas includes to prevent sea pollution and to ensure that there would be no more fishing boat using of trawl.

The minister has asked all provincial administrations to issue regional regulations on zonation of coastal areas and small isles.

"We have continued to launch socialization and next year hopefully all 34 provinces have issued the regulations," Director General of Sea Space Management Brahmantya Satyamurti Poerwadi has said.

Brahmantya said there are a lot of things to straightened out including the need to issue regional regulation in a bid to optimize sea potential.

The Marine and Fisheries Ministry already sent 5 letters to provincial administrations to remind them of the importance of issuing the regional regulations on zonation plan for coastal areas and small isles (RZWP3K).

"Without RZWP3K, sea management could not be sustainable," Brahmantya said, stressing that RZWP3K is required by the Law No. 27 of 2007 on management of coastal areas and small isles.

The law requires regional administrations to have Zonation Plan for Coastal Areas and Small Isles in the respective regions.

The regulation would be effective for 20 years but could be reviewed every 5 years.

RZWP3K arranges a number of aspects such as allocation of spaces for public utilization, conservation areas , certain national strategic areas and sea channels and priority sea area for social culture conservation, economy , seas transport, strategic industry and defense and security.

So far there is only one province, North Sulawesi, having regional regulation on zonation of coastal areas.

Soon in the future,Brahmantya said, there are 12 provinces expected to have regulations on zonation of coastal areas and small isles including East Java, Central Java, West Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Banten, Jakarta, Lampung, and North Kalimantan.
