REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUMENEP -- The salt production of farmers in the regency of Sumenep, East Java reached 47,000 tons in the first nine months of the year.

"The weather has been favorable since mid August resulting in an increase the farmers' salt production," head of the District Fishery Office Arif Rusdi said here on Thursday.

Salt production in the country fell earlier this year on weather anomaly that caused harvest failure resulting shortage in supply on the domestic market.

Based on official record of the district fishery office, farmers' salt production in Sumenep in the first seven months of the year reached only 850 tons.

The production began to rise in mid August with favorable weather condition. By the end of August, the production reached 24.500 tons and toward the end of September, the production surged to 47,000 tons," Rusdi said.

Rusdi said he hoped the weather condition would remain favorable in the remaining months of the year.

The Sumenep's salt production target this year was earlier set at 368,000 tons by the Marine and Fisheries Ministry but later it was cut to only 125,000 tons.

Sumenep is the largest salt producing district in the country.
