I never issued reclamation permit: Jokowi

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEKASI -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he never issued permit of Jakarta's bay reclamation project. He stated that during inauguration of shrimp ponds revitalization at Bakti village, Muara Gembong Sub-district, Bekasi Regency, on Wednesday.

"As president, I never issued permission for reclamation project. As well as Jakarta governor," said Jokowi on Wednesday (November 1).

His statement came to respond the question about Gubernatorial Decree (Pergub) No. 146 of 2014 on Technical Guidelines for Building and Licensing Services and Reclamation Facility of the North Coast Strategic Area of Jakarta, which was not the granting of licenses for the reclamation project at Jakarta bay.

The regulation was considered as a form of permit that issued by Jokowi while he served as Jakarta governor.

"The Pergub is a guide in case if you ask for permission. It did not mean that I gave the permission to run reclamation project. Not that," Jokowi explained.

On Tuesday, Vice President Jusuf Kalla reiterated that the construction of new reclaimed islets at Jakarta bay will not be continued. However, the existing project will be carried on.

"It's impossible to demolish reclaimed islets. Existing islets should be completed. The islets will be damaged if we did not utilize it," he said at his office, Tuesday.

Kalla said, he already discussed Jakarta bay reclamation with governor Anies Baswedan. He asked, the reclaimed islets to be more beneficial for the public and government.

"The government did not say that it (the reclamation project) would be continued, but it has stated that the running project would be continued, and I think the Jakarta administration has agreed to this," Kalla stated here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, deputy governor Sandiaga Uno said, the Jakarta provincial government's decision on Jakarta bay reclamation is final.

"We have heard the people's aspiration on reclamation and our job is to stop reclamation. We are looking for a process that is really awaited by all citizens of Jakarta," Sandiaga said on Wednesday (October 18).
