REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Infrastructure development being conducted by the government is aimed at uniting Indonesia and realizing equitable growth across the country, according to President Widodo.
"Several people assume that infrastructure development relates only to the economy, mobility, and logistics, which is true. However, the most important benefit of infrastructure development is that we can unite Indonesia," Widodo noted here on Monday.
The construction and revitalization of several ports and airports in remote areas are aimed at uniting people residing in 17 thousand islands spread across Indonesia.
Transportation infrastructure constructed in Indonesia can connect people in the western areas of Indonesia, including Aceh, with those residing in the eastern parts of the country, such as Wamena of Papua, he added.
Transportation facilities, including small airfields and ports, are being developed to boost the mobility of local people residing on remote islands.

Widodo also reiterated that construction of the Trans Papua highway aims to boost economic development in Papua and is a form of equitable development for all Indonesians.
Infrastructure development must be carried out in all areas across Indonesia to support the local economic development.
The president noted that infrastructure development in the western and eastern areas of Indonesia is still not the same.
"If we compare the ease of transportation in the western and eastern areas of Indonesia, there is still a wide gap. For instance, the people in Wamena City take four days on foot to cross a jungle to reach the Nduga District," Widodo noted.
Additionally, Widodo said the keys to achieving development in Indonesia are sound work ethics, increased productivity, and discipline.
