REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- In the midst of rapid technological development, social media plays an important role in building democracy in Indonesian society, according to the candidate for West Java governor, Ridwan Kamil.
"Through social media, we can not only share important moments in our lives with others but we can also express our opinions in a responsible manner," Kamil remarked here on Thursday.
However, Kamil, commonly known as Kang Emil, added that there are still many who abuse social media to spread hate speech, hoaxes, and slander.
Kamil encourages people not only to choose but also to sort the information they share.
"I am often hit by hoaxes, but I quickly clarify them on my social media account," he said.
Kamil invited the mass media to build a balanced and credible news source to maintain peace and harmony in the nation.
"What determines the future of this nation is how we manage the ocean of information. A credible media is the last bastion to ward off hoaxes," he noted.
