REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Cyber and State Codes Board (BSSN) is focused on supporting cybersecurity and not on handling "hoaxes," or false news, Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara stated.
"Hoax is a matter of content, so the BSSN's task is not related to it," Rudiantara noted at the office of the Coordinating Ministry of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs here on Wednesday.
He further explained that the BSSN is entirely responsible for maintaining state security in the digital sector, especially preventing the entry of "malware."
"The focus of BSSN is on cybersecurity issues, such as handling the problems of 'hacking,'" the minister of communication and informatics remarked.
Rudiantara also stated that the BSSN can formulate policies that regulate cybersecurity, including those related to deterrence, mitigation, and recovery or rebuilding of state facilities that had been exposed to malware.
"There will also be some functions of the Directorate of Communications and Information Technology that work together and its activities will become part of the BSSN," Rudiantara pointed out.
BSSN is an institution directly under the president and is accountable to him, but earlier, it was under the coordinating minister for political, legal, and security affairs.
In the meantime, Deputy House Speaker Agus Hermanto has expressed hope that the newly formed BSSN would work full time to counter hoaxes and hate speeches on social media.
The agency, under the leadership of Major General Djoko Setiadi, will be able to deal with various challenges due to its intelligence function, he noted here on Wednesday.
The agency's other functions include security and communication in the cyber world, the Democratic Party's politician remarked.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives Abdul Kharis Almasyari opined that it is crucial for the BSSN chief to work in synergy with other institutions related to cybersecurity.
