REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Commission of Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has formed a team to monitor the simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) 2018. The team will try to ensure the elections are free from inter-tribe, -religious, -racial and -group (SARA) discrimination.
"It is important to ensure dignified elections that are free from discrimination based on racial content and must respect the right to vote for all sections of Indonesian society, especially the vulnerable and minority groups, and should have a positive impact on legislative elections and the 2019 presidential elections" Komnas HAM noted in its written statement here on Monday.
According to Komnas HAM, Pilkada is an effort to fulfill the rights to participate in the government in accordance with article 43 of Law No. 39 of 1999 on Human Rights (HAM).
The regional elections monitoring team was formed based on the mandate of Konmas HAM in accordance with the Constitution and some findings in the 2015 and 2017 elections.
The Komnas HAM election monitoring team will later provide election-related HAM education through various activities, such as election campaigns, workshops, and seminars. The monitoring team will be launched and introduced to the public on Monday.
