REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- The Medan Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has declared that the capital city of North Sumatra Province remains safe from the volcanic dust of Mount Sinabung's eruption. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported that the volcanic dust has not reached Medan as the wind from Karo District was blowing up to the west and south, Head of the agency's Data and Information Division Syahnan stated here on Monday.

Medan is located in the northeastern part of Karo District, and so that the volcanic dust would not likely reach the city. Instead, Mount Sinabung's ashes would potentially spread to the areas of Dairi District in North Sumatra Province and Kutacane in Aceh Province, he noted.

He further remarked that the cloudy sky over Medan was not because of the eruption but was more likely related to the city's weather condition, he noted, adding that the weather looked cloudy on Monday afternoon because of the transition process from rainy to dry season.

Mount Sinabung in Karo District, North Sumatra, again erupted on Monday at 8:53 a.m. local time. Based on the PVMBG's report, the eruption was stronger than the previous one and was triggered by some subsequent eruptions of lower frequencies.

The strong eruption has led to the eruption of ashes around 5 thousand meters to the sky. It has spread to 4.9 kilometers to the south and has reached 3.5 kilometers to the east and southeast.
