REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Four suspects involved in a drug smuggling attempt and evidence in the form of 1.6 tons of methamphetamine will be transferred to Jakarta for further investigation. They were scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Thursday. "They will be transferred to Jakarta tomorrow along with the evidence. Possibly tomorrow," Senior Commissioner Pol Turman Siregar, an official of the police's criminal investigation unit, remarked here on Wednesday.

Of the four suspects, who are all Chinese nationals, only one of them held a legal document, and they only carried a photocopy of the ship's document.

"They had no original copy of the ship's document," he remarked.

The police have found crab-catching nets, but they believe it was only a ploy to hide the illegal drugs, as no single crab was found aboard the vessel.

"Our personnel have searched the ship but did not find any evidence of crabs being caught," he noted, adding that the police is still investigating the whereabouts of the ship's owner.

He could not confirm whether the drug smuggling attempt was linked to the previous incident to smuggle one ton of methamphetamine found in Batam.

Meanwhile, the Batam customs office has officially handed over evidence in the form of 1.6 tons of meth and four suspects to the police's Bareskrim.

"This is a formal procedure to hand over evidence and suspects to the police headquarters, as yesterday's operation was conducted jointly by the customs office and the police," Susila Brata, head of the Batam customs office, noted.

As subsequent measures, the case will be handled by the criminal investigation unit.

"We have transferred this to the police. Further investigation will be conducted by the police," he added.
