REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEKASI -- President Director of state-owned toll road construction company PT Jasa Marga Desi Arryani inspected the Jakarta-Cikampek II elevated toll road. Arryani conducted the inspection for the first time after the government issued a moratorium to temporarily halt work on the construction of elevated roads on Feb 20.

"I hope that PT Jasamarga Jalanlayang Cikampek (JJC) would continue to work on the non-elevated sections of the project," the PT Jasa Marga president director noted in a press statement on Sunday night.

Arryani also called on JJC, as a subsidiary firm of her company, to consistently apply the Occupational Health and Work Safety Management System as well as the standard procedure in a bid to avoid work-related accidents.

"I should express here that PT Jasa Marga supports the government's policy regarding a moratorium on the construction of elevated roads and bridges," she noted.

Jasa Marga will re-evaluate its work methods and building construction procedure, especially with regard to occupational health and work safety.

During her visit, Arryani, who was accompanied by President Director of JJC Djoko Dwijono and General Manager of Jasa Marga for the Cikampek branch Raddy R. Lukman, was briefed on the progress in construction of the elevated Jakarta-Cikampek II toll road project spanning a length of 38 kilometers.

Construction of the Jakarta-Cikampek II project was initiated by Jasa Marga to provide an alternative toll road for travelers heading from Jakarta for Cikampek and Bandung or vice versa.

It is being constructed to overcome recurrent traffic gridlocks on the existing Jakarta-Cikampek toll roads.

The Jakarta-Cikampek II toll road stretches on the section between Cikunir and Karawang Barat in West Java.

Dwijono noted that construction of the Jakarta-Cikampek II toll road, before the issuance of the moratorium, had reached 24.48 percent completion.

"With the issuance of the moratorium, the construction of elevated sections of the road should be stopped temporarily until deemed fit for continuation after a thorough evaluation process," he revealed.

The government, through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, has issued a moratorium on Feb 2 to temporarily stop the construction of 32 elevated toll roads, bridges, and four light rail transit projects following several accidents due to collapse in infrastructure projects.

During the period between August 1, 2017, and February 20, 2018, accidents were reported in at least 14 projects in Jakarta, Palembang (South Sumatra), Bogor (West Java), Cikampek (West Java), Pasuruan (East Java), Pemalang-Batang (Central Java), and Depok (West Java).

The project is being temporarily suspended, pending thorough evaluation that is expected to be completed in two weeks.
