New types of drugs target children: BNN

BNN has identified 68 new kinds of drugs during 2017.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has identified 68 new kinds of drugs during 2017. Most of the drugs were targeted for children as the prey, an official has said.

"New types of narcotics are increasingly widespread. There are 68 new kinds of narcotics in 2017. From early March until last Sunday, three kinds of new narcotics were found," according to Ali Johardi, BNN deputy for eradication affairs said here on Tuesday.

With that amount of new drugs, Ali concluded that a new kind of narcotic emerged monthly. He event said that the drugs syndicates also applied technology as owned by the BNN.

Ali further said, apart from its new types, the modus operandi of the drug syndicates in spreading the drugs also varies, especially for beginners of targeting addicts.

Some techniques used (to spread the drugs) can be substances mixed into food or drink, ink markers with strong scents, ink used in magazines, even through a tattoo of children's toys, he explained.

Ali went on to say that the syndicates continue to create new types of drugs and create new modus operandi in distributing the drugs.

In the meantime, chief of sub-Directorate of Supervision of Tobacco Products of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) Moriana Hutabarat confirmed that the drugs as mentioned to be in candy or other foods are not proven.

But he explained the existence of drug content as it is mixed on food or drink individually by irresponsible person and then given to the children.
