REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GRESIK -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) congratulated all Indonesian women in relation to the commemoration of International Women's Day. He wished all women in the country could have more peaceful and prosperous life.
"Once again, happy International Women's day. I wish all women in Indonesia have more peaceful and prosperous life, and happy working," said Jokowi on Thursday (March 8).
International Women's Day is commemorated every March 8. On this date, many individuals and non-governmental organizations are hoping for improvement, especially on gender equality for women.
National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) is also one of those. The institution hoped International Women's Day can be a momentum to achieve gender equality.
Hundreds of women from different organizations stage Women's Parade to commemorate International Women's Day 2018 in front of Gedung Sate, Bandung, on Sunday (March 4).
"International Women's Day this time coincides with 20 years of reformation of the Indonesian nation, so we must reflect what has been achieved in the field of gender equality," said Komnas Perempuan commissioner, Azriana.
She said there were some positive things that have been achieved by Indonesia such as Supreme Court (MA) Regulation number 3 of 2017 on Guiding Court on Lawsuits Against Women. Azriana said in facing the case of women as victims, convicts, or witnesses, is currently no longer seen as black and white.
Supreme Court decision made the trial will also consider the social and political constraint faced by women when facing against the law. In addition, Komnas Perempuan also highlighted the development of discussion on the Elimination of Sexual Violence Bill (RUU) which is considered slow and has not fully comprehend the rights of women as victims.
