REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUNUKAN -- The Chinese government will realize its interest in investing a budget of Rp12 trillion in North Kalimantan province to build the Bulan Bridge. The bridge will connect Bulungan district on the mainland of Kalimantan Island with the city of Tarakan in a different island in the province.

Governor of North Kalimantan, Irianto Lambrie, stated in a written text received in Samarinda, East Kalimantan province, on Wednesday that the investment plan has been approved by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chinese company of China Road and Bridge Corporation through a sub loan scheme.

The North Kalimantan provincial government will also utilize grant funds of 200 million yuan from the Chinese government for Indonesia to fund the preparation of the bridge design.

To realize the construction of the 5.6-kilometer-long bridge, the provincial government has built supporting infrastructure in the form of the nearest streets.

The Bulan Bridge will be the longest bridge in Indonesia, followed by the existing Suramadu Bridge, which is a 5.438-kilometers-long and connects Surabaya city and Madura Island in East Java province.

He remarked that the Bulan Bridge will be a liaison and pathway for the smooth supply of goods from Tarakan Island, as a transit area, to the districts of Bulungan, Malinau, and Tana Tidung.

The construction of the bridge will boost the rapid growth of economy of North Kalimantan and encourage affordable prices of basic necessities.

North Kalimantan is the youngest province in Indonesia, which is adjacent to the eastern part of Malaysia.
