REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) disclosed it has received many reports of violence against students committed by teachers, principals, school's clerks, and other students at the start of 2018.

"Various cases of violence against students, committed by teachers, show that schools which should have been safe places for children could turn into dangerous places," KPAI's commissioner for education Retno Listyarti said here on Monday.

This shows that teachers that should serve as protectors for their students, could become dangerous figures for children, she noted.

Some 72 percent of the complaints of abuse received by KPAI deal with physical abuse and victims of policy, followed by psychological abuse (nine percent), financial abuse or extortion by other students (four percent), and sexual abuse (two percent).

"Sexual abuses against students which were committed by teachers and went viral in the social media reached 13 percent, although the cases were not reported to the KPAI, but the commission has monitored them," Retno said.

Therefore, the commission has called on school administrations to open a hotline for complaints, and encouraged students to make any report when they encountered physical, psychological, financial and sexual abuses.

"Moreover, there must be a protection system to protect students that have become victims or witnesses of the abuses," she said.
