REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The governor of Indonesia's capital city Jakarta, Anies Baswedan met with Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for International Relations, Nina Hachigian in Los Angeles, USA. Anies informed the meeting through his Facebook on Wednesday.
According to Anies, Nina Hachigian previously worked as the United States' ambassador to ASEAN for two years. The ASEAN secretariat is located in Jakarta.
"We talked about sister city program between Jakarta and Los Angeles. The sister city program was agreed when Jakarta was led by Governor Wiyogo Atmodarminto (in 1990), but practically there has never been any use of this cooperation," Anies said.
The talks covered various aspects ranging from about arts, digital, clean water, transportation, to the matter of waste management.
"We agreed to make use of the sister city program as a venue between Jakarta and Los Angeles residents. Not just between governments, but it involves citizens," the governor remarked.
Both Anies and Nina Hachigian wished the term "sister city" between Los Angeles and Jakarta is concrete and not only ceremonial, so future cooperation is to raise the quality of Jakarta and its citizens into the equivalent of mega cities and other big cities in the world, one of them is Los Angeles.
ASEAN comprising Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines, and Vietnam.
