REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Agriculture Ministry through Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Health has stressed Indonesia will not import chicken meat at this moment from Brazil. Animal Husbandry and Health Director General I Ketut Diarmita made the remarks in response to rumors that Indonesia is planning to import chicken meat from Barazil after the World Trade Organization (WTO) had made a decision.
"The Indonesian Agriculture Minister and a team of the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry met on February 12, 2018 to discuss opportunity to enhance bilateral relations, especially in the agriculture and animal husbandry. It will be carried out through Indonesia-Brazil strategic partnership cooperation framework," Diarmita said here on Tuesday.
Diarmita explained that the meeting resulted in several agreements, namely the Minister of Agriculture approving the entry of Brazilian beef to Indonesia and the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture team agreed not to include chicken meat and products to Indonesia.
This is because Indonesia has over supply of chicken meat, even exported to Japan, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and is in the exploration of exports to other Asian countries and the Middle East.
In addition, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture team will also encourage businesses in Brazil to invest in "breeding farm" and cattle breeding business in Indonesia.
Related to the WTO decision on the lawsuit filed by Brazil, I Ketut Diarmita said that the policy and regulation of the import of animal products must be in accordance with the terms of the WTO agreement.
Currently the Government is finalizing the draft Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture on Amendment to the Minister of Agriculture's Regulation no. 34/2016 which conforms to the recommendations of the WTO Panel.
As is known, Brazil has filed a lawsuit to the WTO for its objection to Indonesian policy which is considered to be banning and limiting imports of chicken and chicken products from Brazil since 2009.
