REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Supreme Court Chief Justice Hatta Ali installed Perry Warjiyo as Bank Indonesia (BI) governor for the 2018-2023 term here on Thursday. Warjiyo replaced Agus Martowardojo whose terms of office ended in May 2018.
Warjiyo was appointed to the post of BI governor based on Presidential Decree No. 70/P/2018 dated April 16, 2018.
Warjiyo who graduated from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta is formerly BI deputy governor for the 2013-2018 term. While he held the post of BI deputy governor, he spent much of his time improving the aspects of monetary policy, international economy, and sharia compliant economy.

As a new BI governor, Warjiyo has formidable jobs to address pressure on the rupiah's exchange rate against the US dollar. Since early this year, the rupiah fell 4.53 percent against the US dollar. The rupiah currently trades at above Rp14,100 per dollar, the weakest level since 2015.
During a fit and proper test held at the House of Representatives (DPR) some time ago, Warjiyo vowed to apply pro-stability and pro-growth monetary policy.
Also present at the swearing-in ceremony were Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution, Social Affairs Minister Idrus Marham, State Enterprises MinisterRini Soemarno, Chief Commissioner of the Financial Service Authority (OJK) Wimboh Santoso and a number of chiefs of high state institutions.
