REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said she is waiting for a breakthrough from the newly inaugurated Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo. The most anticipated breakthrough will be efforts to stabilize the national economy.
Sri hoped the new BI governor contributes to further stabilize national economy and financial system. According to Sri, Indonesia needs the right monetary policy to respond to the weakening of rupiah exchange rate in order to provide a positive sentiment. She believed Perry is capable to perform the mission.
"Our financial system must be maintained and we hope the impact is positive," Sri said after attending inauguration of Perry at Supreme Court on Thursday (May 24).
Sri said Perry is a credible figure and can provide a calming leadership of market participants. She said ready to work with Perry.
"BI and government will continue to implement policies to respond to existing condition and quickly including adjusting action," said Sri.
Furthermore, Sri said government and BI must focus on stability to not create an unsustainable economic situation. BI and government will create a stability in maintaining the sustainability of all development efforts.
Perry officially inaugurated after he stated oath of office at Supreme Court in Jakarta on Thursday (May 24). He replaced Agus Martowardojo who has retired from his position in central bank.
Perry will take the helm of the central bank for 2018 to 2023 period. He said BI would prioritize its monetary policy to stabilize rupiah.
Rupiah has weakened 4,53 percent in May 21 and now in the range of Rp 14,000 per US dollars, which is the weakest value of the rupiah since 2015.
