MV Sinar Bangun search period extended until Saturday

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SIMALUNGUN -- National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) announced that the search period for victims of MV Sinar Bangun and the ship will be extended. The join team will be given three more days to conduct search around Lake Toba, North Sumatra.

Medan Search and Rescue (SAR) Office Head, Budiawan said the search is extended until next Saturday (June 30). It will be done, in accordance with the order from Basarnas head M Syaugi.

“This is the eleventh day of search process. We still haven’t found yet another victim, but we keep on trying,” said Budiawan on Thursday (June 28).

MV Sinar Bangun capsized in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, at around 5 p.m. local time on last June 18. The latest development revealed that the boat carried 188 people while its capacity was only 43 passengers. Only 22 people have been found, with 19 of them having survived, including the captain of MV Sinar Bangun.

Previously, scan sonar has detected objects in two locations at a depth of 490 meters in Lake Toba on Sunday (June 24) evening. The objects are detected 2 kilometres and 2,5 kilometres southwest of the port respectively. Basarnas said will ascertain the objects in the locations before taking further steps.

Earlier North Sumatra Police confirmed that the search period of MV Sinar Bangun victims will be extended. The search would not be stopped until the victims are found.

“Central Government asked the search period to be extended,” said North Sumatra Police chief on Tuesday (June 26).
