REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has given a chance to several political party chiefs to propose their candidates as his running mate in the 2019 presidential election. He said that the chance to compete is still opened until a couple more weeks.
"We will decide (the running mate) in one or two weeks. Please compete over the period of time," he said in his address to the 20th anniversary of the Nation Awakening Party (PKB) at Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel here on Sunday night.
Jokowi said he has not decided who will be his running mate in the election. He said he has frequently met with several chiefs of political parties including the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the National Democrat (Nasdem) Party, the Golkar Party, the People's Conscience (Hanura) Party and the Nation Awakening Party (PKB).
The president has narrowed down the list of his potential running mates from 10 to five names. But he stopped short of revealing the five names.
Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said the president has discussed the five names with a number of political party chiefs.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) is set to register presidential and vice presidential candidates from August 4 to 10.
