70 percent of buildings in North Lombok damaged: Govt

Govt to proceed with rehabilitation as soon as possible.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government is preparing rehabilitation and reconstruction measures after a magnitude 7 earthquake stroke the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday (Aug 5). The quake has caused physical damages in both Lombok and Bali, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said.

"The most important thing is to be alert in responding to emergencies, and then rehabilitation and reconstruction. According to West Nusa Tenggara Governor Muhammad Zainul Majdi this morning, 70 percent of buildings in North Lombok were damaged," he said after attending the plenary meeting of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Advisory Board in Jakarta, Monday.

The government had also set the emergency response period for earthquakes in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and Bali for two to three weeks. The National Board for Disaster Management and the National Defense Force are also on it.

"The government will proceed with the rehabilitation as soon as possible," he stated.

A magnitude 7 earthquake stroke West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday afternoon. The death toll has reached 105 people dead, mostly caused by parts of building that had fallen on them, and 236 others wounded.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency recorded that the earthquake was located at 8.37 degrees southern latitude and 116.48 degrees eastern longitude on the North-Northeast slopes of Mount Rinjani. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers and had been declared a potential tsunami.
