REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Gerindra Party agreed with Sandiaga Uno’s statement that asked political tension to be lowered due to the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar. The party will support government to solve the problem.
“We want to support government to work hard to prevent the rupiah exchange rate keeps on weakening against US dollar,” said Gerindra Party politician Andre Rosiade on Thursday (Sept 6).
He said Gerindra Party is committed to maintain political tension so that it will not heat up for now.
“Yes we must do it (to hold political tension), the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate not only government’s problem, but all of us,” Andre added.
Earlier, Sandiaga as a politician with a business background and a vice presidential candidate of presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto has reminded the government of the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar. He said the government must focus on dealing with the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate and not on spending more time in politics.
"We should not mix economics with politics. Just focus on the economy first, that is what we hope for," Sandiaga said.
However, Gerindra Party deputy chairman Arif Puyono assessed there was no connection between political tension and the weakening of the rupiah. He considered that Indonesia's political tension was in a reasonable condition, even though the heat of the political temperature was just happening on social medias.
According to Arif, the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar was due to the inability of government to manage debt. Moreover, government investment from the current debt yield is entering maturity.
“The way to calm political situation doesn’t have connection with the weakening of the rupiah, not at all. It means there is no effect between political tension and the weakening of the rupiah,” Arif explained.
