REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Would-be presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and National Mandate Party (PAN) Chairman Zulkifli Hasan attended Ulema's Ijtima II meeting in Jakarta on Sunday. They arrived at the meeting at 1 p.m. local time.
Prabowo was not accompanied by his would-be running mate Sandiaga Uno. Prabowo who is a former commandant of the Army's elite force Kopassus also attended Ulema's previous Ijtima I meeting held in Jakarta in July. The Ulemas in their Ijtima I forum recommended two names to be selected as a vice presidential candidte for Prabowo's running mate.
Chairman of the National Movement to Safeguard Ulema's Fatwa (GNPF), Yusuf Muhammad Martak told a press conference that the second ulemas ijtima would support Prabowo Subianto - Sandiaga Uno presidential pair-up.
But the would-be presidential pair should sign an integrity pact produced by the Ulema's Ijtima II forum. The signing of the pact is part of the Ijtima series.
If the pair-up sign it, it means that Prabowo and Uno agree to carry out their commitment to all recommendations by the ulema's ijtima. "When the integrity pact is signed, the ulemas will automatically lend their support behind Prabowo," Martak told the press conference.
He said, all the steps taken by the GNPF and Ijtima Ulama had been coordinated and communicated with Habib Rizieq Shihab in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Martak said, support for Prabowo - Sandiaga does not contradict the previous ulema's Ijtima I which recommended Salim Segaf Al Jufri and Muslim scholar Abdul Somad as vice presidential candidates.
According to him, the Ulema Ijtima I wants a change of president in the 2019 presidential election. "The Ulema's Ijtima II I think remains consistent," he said.
