REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Giwo Rubianto Wiyogo was elected as one of the vice presidents of the International Council of Women (ICW) for the next three years. In the voting held at the Grand Inna Malioboro Hotel, Yogyakarta, on Saturday, Wiyogo managed to secure 62 votes.

Wiyogo is chairperson of the Indonesian Women's Congress (Kowani), the oldest and largest women's organization in Indonesia, with a total membership of 62 million women across the country. She became one of the newly elected five ICW vice presidents from seven candidates submitted in the ballot.

The seven candidates in the election of the ICW vice president are Linda C. Liu from Taiwan, with 96 votes; Doris Bingley from Malta, with 91 votes; Jamal Hermes Ghibril from Lebanon, with 84 votes; Fatma Fatos Inal from Turkey, with 69 votes; and Giwo Rubianto Wiyogo from Indonesia, with 62 votes.

Monthip Sriratana Tabucanon from Thailand, with 35 votes, and Pushpa Hedge from India, with 54 votes, were the two other two candidates, who were not elected.

The 35th General Assembly of the ICW and the Indonesian Thousand Women's Organization Meeting were attended by 169 leaders of women's organizations that were members of ICW, as well as 1,000 leaders of women's organizations and 2,050 participants from all over Indonesia. The 35th General Assembly of ICW is held in coincidence with the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of ICW established in Washington D.C. on March 25, 1888. ICW is a part of the UN Women in empowering women across the globe.
