REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALU -- Some 1,700 scholars on Islamic studies from various countries attended the 18th International Conference on Islamic Studies (AICIS) in Palu, Central Sulawesi, from September 17-20, 2018. The theme of the conference is "Islam in a Globalizing World: Text, Knowledge and Practice."
Some 300 papers are to be discussed during the conference, which was initiated by Indonesia 18 years ago. Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin officially opened the conference in Palu on Tuesday.
The minister hoped that the conference could contribute to world peace. Among the keynote speakers of the conference are Saifuddin; Dominik Muller Ph.D frp, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Germany; Prof. Dr. Hans Christian Gunther from Albert Ludwig Universitat, Freiburg, Germany; Dr. Hew Wai Weng from the University of Kebangsaan Malaysia; and Dr. Ken Miichi from Waseda University, Japan.
The sub-themes of the conference are the Quran, Hadith and
Contemporary Interpretation; Islamic Education, Culture and Knowledge Production; Muslim Mobilities, Migration and Diaspora; Authors, Texts and Islamic Thought; Piety, Popular Islamism and Media; Agency, Power, Populism and Local Politics;
Islamic Economics, AEC and SDGs; Interreligious Relations and Minority Affairs; Science and Technology in Islamic Universities; and Islamic Visual Arts, Architecture and Performance.
