REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — General Election Commission (KPU) commissioner Wahyu Setiawan said there were two options in responding Supreme Court's decision to let ex graft convicts to run in legislative election. However, KPU has not decided yet whether to mark the ballots or announce names of former corruption convicts at each polling station (TPS).
According to Wahyu, basically KPU has an obligation to inform the public about the candidates' personal data and track records.
“We will discuss our way to inform the public on KPU plenary,” said Wahyu on Wednesday (Sept 19).
Previously, KPU commissioner Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi stressed that KPU has learned Supreme Court decision. KPU would accommodate the ruling that gave a green light to former corruption convicts to be lawmaker candidates.
“Apparently, the ruling only related to former corruption convicts, meanwhile, two other former prisoners, namely drug dealer convicts and sexual crimes against children convicts are not canceled by Supreme Court," said Pramono.
Therefore, KPU would only revise only the phrase of former corruption convicts. Pramono explained has asked permission from House of representatives Commission II to revise commission regulation (PKPU) related to nomination of legislative candidates and Regional Representative Council (DPD).
