Basarnas still finds many bodies of Lion Air JT 610 victims

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) found many bodies of victims of crashed Lion Air JT 610 flight in the seabed as the search operation entered the seventh day on Sunday. Basarnas mobilized a ROV (Remote Operating Vehicle) to as far as 250 meters.

"It turned out that we still found many body parts of victims we needed to evacuate," Basarnas Deputy Chief for Operations Nugroho Budi Wiryanto said in a press conference here on Sunday.

He said the joint SAR team collected 33 more bodies and all of them had been taken to the integrated command post at the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) II's pier. The figure brought to 138 the number of bodies collected until the seventh day of search operation on Sunday.

"All the body bags have been recorded and handed over to DVI and will be later sent to the Police Hospital," he said.

During the search operation on Sunday, Nugroho and Basarnas Chief Muhammad Syaugi monitored the search operation in the field to ensure that it would run in a smooth and coordinated way. The joint SAR team also managed to lift splinters of the crashed plane's outer parts and landing gears.

The Lion Air JT 610 plane with 189 people on board crashed in the Tanjungpakis waters in Karawang district, West Java, on Monday (Oct 29) nearly 13 minutes after it took off from Soekarno-Hatta Airport.
