Donggala people still live in refugee camps

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake, tsunami hit Donggala and Palu on Sept 28 evening.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DONGGALA — Donggala Regency Government in Central Sulawesi was urged to immediately build temporary shelters (huntara) for earthquake and tsunami victims in the region. Huntara is needed as an effort to rebuild community welfare.

“Huntara must immediately be built, they need more than distribution of basic necessities,” said Central Sulawesi Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) member,  Muhamad Masykur on Monday (Nov 12).

Masykur said in almost refugee areas, where people lost their houses, there was no construction of temporary shelters. Thosands of people in Donggala had lost their houses when earthquake and tsunami struck on last Sept 28.

The areas impacted by earthquake and tsunami, included Wani Satu village, Wani Dua village, Lero Tatari, Lero, Tompe, Tanjung Padang, Lende Ntovea, Lombonga, and a number of villages in Banawa. Currently, people there must live in refugee camps.

Masykur said at transition time was set for the next 60 days until December 25, according to Gubernatorial Decree Letter No. 466/425/BPBD/2018. He said there is limit time for the victims to live under camps.

A report on October 17, 2018, stated that the death toll of a magnitude-7.4 earthquake and a subsequent tsunami that hit Central Sulawesi on September 28, 2018, reached 2,102.

The total number of injured people was 4,612, while 680 people were still missing, and 152 others remained under the debris of buildings destroyed by the natural disaster.

Some 68,451 homes were seriously damaged and 78,994 people were displaced.
