REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, UBUD -- China has offered ASEAN assistance in development of 5G technology. However, Indonesia still wants to study the ecosystem and model of business in which the technology would be applied.
"China offers the 5G technology, but it is up to each country as it needs to see the ecosystem and model of business, to whom, to industrialists, corporations or consumers," Communications and Informatics Minister Rudiantara said on the sidelines of the TELSOM TELMIN 2018 meeting here on Thursday.
The government of Indonesia leaves it to cellular phone operators to adopt or not to adopt the 5G technology. The cellular operators need to determine who would use the technology.
The 5G networks offer a much higher speed that the 4G technology being used widely at present, but the consequence, the price is much more expensive. Rudiantara estimated the price could be five times up to 10 times more expensive than 4G networks.
Therefore, the corporate subscribers need to have much stronger purchasing power.
The assistance to develop the 5G technology to ASEAN was offered at the regional communications ministerial meeting of TELSOM TELMIN 2018 in Ubud. China at a news conference in Bali said they had conducted research and development of the 5G technology.
"We have good achievement for 5G technology and we have tested the system. We are also accelerating our technology. We want to share our successful knowledge and experience with ASEAN to speed up the adoption of the 5G technology," China's Deputy Minister for Industry and Informatics Technology Zhaoxiong Chen said in a news conference in Bali.
China said it was pleased if it could strengthen cooperation in technology with ASEAN. They said they are ready to bring manufacturers Huawei and ZTE to realize cooperation in the development of 5G technology to ASEAN.
