REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUKABUMI -- Indonesia has a special reinsurance company which manages earthquake and tsunami disasters as the country is prone to natural disasters. The insurance company is currently focusing on developing business into other disasters such as tornadoes, including landslides.
"We set up a special reinsurance company for disasters because data on earthquake show that this disaster frequently happens, and always causes tremendous impacts as recently occurred in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, and Palu, Central Sulawesi," Director of Special Risk Insurance Company (MAIPARK) Ahmad Fauzie Darwis said here on Sunday.

Every year employees of the company receive training on disasters to increase awareness of disaster risks, especially in assessing and managing disaster risks.
According to Ahmad, Ciletuh Palabuhanratu Geopark in West Java has been chosen as the training venue for employees and a number of workers from other insurance companies because this location is one of the areas that prone to earthquakes and tsunamis.
"We are also cooperating with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), tsunami experts and geologist from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB)," Ahmad explained.
Meanwhile, Head of Mitigation of Sukabumi Disaster Management Agency, Dudung Abdulah, said Sukabumi District was one of the disaster-prone areas such as earthquakes and tsunamis. Seminars and training for insurance and reinsurance employees provide special knowledge on disasters.
"The occurrence time of earthquake and tsunami cannot be predicted, but it must remain vigilant, especially as Sukabumi District has coastline of 117 kilometers long and is located on three earth plates, namely, Australian, Eurasia and Cimandiri Plates," Dudung added.
