REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Candidate for vice president, Sandiaga Uno, said that the law should not be used as a political commodity. He stated that as a response to the plan to release convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Ba'asyir.
"I, as stated in the first debate, do not want the legal process to be used as a political commodity used to perpetuate power," Sandiaga noted, after visiting victims of fires in Tomang, West Jakarta, on Thursday.
He emphasized that the law must be upright, not selective, and not sharply downward but blunted above. He wanted the law to be enforced as fairly as possible for the community.
According to the president's attorney, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Ba'asyir has the right to obtain parole because he has completed more than two-third of his sentence. This means that Ba'asyir has the right to receive parole on Dec 13, 2018.
Yusril revealed that he has coordinated with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) about the issue of Ba'asyir who refused to sign his faithfulness to the Pancasila. Yusril explained the issue of Ba'asyir who did not want to sign the conditions for parole, one of which was about being loyal to the Pancasila.
On this basis, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly remarked that the government was still carrying out an in-depth study on the release of Ba'asyir.
Meanwhile, on that occasion, Sandiaga touched on the matter of preparing for the second debate, which would raise the theme of infrastructure. He admitted that in the last few days he had discussed the debate content with presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto.
"In the next few days, I will start discussions with Subianto," Sandiaga noted.
