REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Indonesia's track record in protecting and promoting human rights can be an asset for being selected to sit in the United Nations Human Rights Council (OHCHR) for 2020-2022, Foreign Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi stated. She said that there are various assets that Indonesia can promote.

"Those are similar to what we have been carrying out during our campaign for the UN Security Council," Marsudi stated after receiving an award from her alma mater Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Friday.

One of the campaign materials that Indonesia continues to voice is the development of democracy, which is parts of the efforts to improve human rights protection, in addition to other policies that have been implemented, such as women's empowerment.

Next week, Marsudi will visit Geneva to attend the OHCHR session scheduled on February 25-28, 2019. During this session, the minister will express her commitment to intensifying Indonesia's candidacy campaign as a member of the OHCHR.

"On Sunday (Feb 24), I will go to Geneva to intensify the campaign to lobby with several countries," she noted.

The selection of members of the OHCHR will be held in November 2019. Indonesia is nominating itself as a member of the council by applying the theme of "Indonesia True Partners for Democracy, Development and Social Justice."

Indonesia is competing with five other countries -- China, Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Marshall Islands -- to be selected as the OHCHR member for the 2020-2022 period for the Asia-Pacific region.
