REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA — Papua Police said theree will be not further demonstration and rally in Jayapura on Tuesday (Sept 3). There was issue that said if there would be a massive rally in the city, after the demonstration against racism ended with riots last week. 

“There is no demonstration today,” said Papua Police spokesman, AM Kamal on Tuesday (Sept 3). 

According to Kamal, Papua Police has annouced to all people in Jayapura and Papua to maintain peace. They were asked to avoid action that could disturb activities in the region. 

“There was an announcement from Papua Police chief, so it needs to be understood,” Kamal added. 

Earlier, there were leaflets or calls for massive demonstrations that will be held on Sept 3 from two different groups. However, Kamal stressed that it was only an issue. 

“it’s only an issue, but i will coordinate this with the intelligence team,” Kamal said. 

People in Jayapura, capital city of Papua Province have been worried due to rumours and messages that spreaded on social medias that said there will be massive demonstration from two different groups. Based on the information, the activities in the city seem to be very quiet. 

The shopping centers and offices were closed. In addition, all the schools still be closed temporarily, which decided by Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tommy Mano.

On last August 29, the masses demonstrated in Jayapura to oppose racist acts against Papuan students. However, the demonstration ended by stone throwing, vandalism, and burning. According to Papua Police data, the riots caused damage at a number of buildings in Jayapura. Among the buildings are government offices, bank offices, company offices, restaurants, and shops.
