REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,  YOGYAKARTA – Ambarawa Museum is now being renovated and expected to be the biggest train museum in Southeast Asia, the Head of Non Building and Historic Conservation Center of PT KAI, Trenggono Adi, said. Ambarawa is planned to become the biggest train museum as it has many trains and locomotives since the Dutch colonial era. The area is also broad enough. “KAI (state owned enterprise in train transportation -Ed) has concern over the heritage and history according to the mandate of Cultural Heritage law,” he said.

The renovation and the collection of cultural heritage objects are undergoing and hoped to be finished in 2013. Ambarawa Museum was only train storage, including steam locomotive collections. Ambarawa was also known as a military center and plantation.

“We can encourage the youths by providing them some historical information. The Conservation and Historical Object Center also tries to enliven the steam locomotive. There are only four in Indonesia; two of them are in Ambarawa, one in Sawahlunto, and one in Solo,” Adi added.
