REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BERAU - Derawan Island in Berau, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, is expected to become world-class tourism destination in 2015. The area of Derawan Island will be turned into high value eco tourism region. It also conserves biodiversity.
For tourist attraction, the island will hold Sail Derawan 2013. Started on June 2013, Sail Derawan will break the world record in the biggest number of divers above 50 years old. About 500 divers will join the event to break a new record.
The event will also hold underwater photographic tournament. Derawan Island is rich of fish and coral reefs, such as nudibranch and crustacea.
The board of Sail Derawan will also invite york cruise tourists in September 2013. A member of the board, Sularso, said the york cruise often only visit Philippine and Malaysia. "The location of Derawan Island is strategic. It is near the border with the Philippines," he said. He added that the upcoming June was the best season to dive in Derawan Island.
