REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- An archeology team from the Archaeology Office of Ambon, Maluku, in collaboration with the University of Washington, the United States, will research the characteristics of dwellings from Neolithic and pre-Neolithic eras in East Seram district.

"Neolithic is the later part of the Stone Age, when ground or polished stone weapons and implements prevailed, and humans started farming and raising," Marlon Ririmase, an archaeologist from the Archaeology Office of Ambon, stated here on Friday.

He remarked that the research, which will be started in Mid-May of 2015, will focus on the Neolithic characteristics in East Seram.

The research will explore the pre-historic potential and the traces of human dwellings from the Neolithic and pre-Neolithic eras, or dating back about three thousand years or earlier, especially in Geser Island and the surrounding small islands.

According to Marlon, the research aims to unearth evidences related to the early Neolithic dwellings, the mobility of the residents, and their activities related to inter-island connectivity during the era.

The archaeology team will also explore the Paleo environment and climate in the East Seram areas.

"The research will be started with a survey to find potential archaeological sites. Four years later, we plan to do the excavations," Marlon noted.

In 2012 and 2013, the Archaeology Office of Ambon had researched the historical potential along the northern coast of East Seram District, and discovered the remains of stone tools from the Stone Age era.

"The stone tools were found at the ground surface level without excavation. On Gorom Island, we found a Dongson Heger bronze drum type I dating back 2.5 thousand years," Marlon added.
