REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- President Joko Widodo will inaugurate the project to develop the airport in the Miangas Island of Talaud Islands District, North Sulawesi Province on Wednesday (Oct 19).
The move comes as part of the efforts to enhance inter-connectivity in border areas. "The North Sulawesi Governor, Olly Dondokambey, and regional coordination officers departed for Miangas on board an Indonesian Military air plane," the public relations officer of North Sulawesi Province, Jemmy Kumendong, stated here on Monday.
The governor plans to check out the preparations for the inauguration ceremony. The island is located along the country's border with the Philippines. Kumendong underlined that the airplane will give people an option to reach the Miangas Island.
Travel by sea often faces constraints such as adverse weather conditions or extreme sea wave situation. The ship operated only once in two weeks.
The Transportation Ministry, along with the North Sulawesi Provincial Administration and Talaud Islands District Administration, has allocated the budget to develop the airport infrastructure on the island. "The development of Miangas Airport cannot be separated from the priorities of the Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla government to develop the rural and border areas of Indonesia," Kumendong remarked.
