REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Leaders of ASEAN member countries agreed on a five-point consensus regarding the crisis in Myanmar as a result of a meeting in Jakarta on Saturday.

"First, violence must be stopped immediately in Myanmar and all parties must exercise complete restraint," ASEAN wrote in its statement.

ASEAN also called for the start of a constructive dialogue between all interested parties to find peaceful solutions in the interests of the Myanmar people.

ASEAN agreed to have a special envoy to facilitate the dialogue with the help of the ASEAN secretary general. ASEAN then agreed to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar.

"Fifth, the special envoy and delegation will visit Myanmar to meet with all interested parties," said ASEAN.

In addition, ASEAN also emphasized the importance of continuing efforts in Myanmar to deal with the situation in Rakhine State.

ASEAN asked for a voluntary and dignified repatriation process to begin, in accordance with the bilateral agreement with Bangladesh.

"We further underline the importance of working to address the root causes of the situation in Rakhine State," said ASEAN.

The leaders meeting was held at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, and was chaired by ASEAN 2021 Chair Sultan Hasanal Bolkiah from Brunei Darussalam.

State leaders or envoys from ASEAN countries attended the meeting in person, including the leader of the Myanmar military junta, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
