REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Imam Shafi'i said, “Allah said, “They ask you about menstruation. Say, 'That period is obstacle'. Therefore keep away from women during menstruation; and do not approach them until they have ended menstruation. When they are clear, you may be closer to them in the way that Allah has commanded you. Indeed Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves” (QS Albaqarah [2]: 222).

In the book of Al-Umm, the main reference of Islamic Fiqh 1, Imam Shafi'i said, “Allah explains that menstruating women are not purified. He ordered a woman who was menstruating not to be 'approached' until she was purified, until she was sanctified using water so that the woman was again among those who were lawful to perform the prayer.

It is not lawful for a man to approach his menstruating wife until his wife is purified. Indeed, Allah ta'ala makes tayamum a thaharah if there is no water, or the person concerned is sick.”

Imam Shafi'i said, “When Allah commands that menstruating women be 'shunned' and made it possible for them to be approached again after the holy day of their period and to have a prayer, while the Sunnah indicates that women who have had a period should continue to pray, it indicates that the husband whose wife is pregnant can 'approach' his wife.”
