REPUBLICA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The air quality in Jakarta was classified as unhealthy on Saturday (7/27/2024) morning. That level puts it in second place as the city with the worst air in the world.

According to data from the air quality monitoring website, IQAir, today at 06:04 WIB, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Jakarta is 164. That is, the province falls into the unhealthy category with PM2.5 air pollution and a concentration value of 73.5 micrograms per cubic meter.

The concentration is equivalent to 14.7 times the value of the annual air quality standard of the World Health Organization (WHO). PM2.5 is an air particle that is very small, namely 2.5 microns (micrometers).

The unhealthy category means the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups. Its content can harm humans or sensitive groups of animals and plants.

Moderate category means air quality that has no effect on human or animal health. However, it can still have an effect on sensitive plants and aesthetic values with a PM2.5 range of 51-100.

A good category indicates a level of air quality that has no effect on human or animal health. This with a PM2.5 range of 0-50.

Currently, the city with the worst air quality is Kinshasa (Congo) with an AQI of 172. Following this, Jakarta (Indonesia) was at 164 and Medan (Indonesia) at 155. Next, Kampala (Uganda) at 144 and Delhi (India) at 144.

Previously, the Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH) has launched an integrated air quality monitoring platform. It studied the results at 31 air quality monitoring stations (SPKU) points spread across the metropolis.

From these SPKU, the data obtained is displayed through the air quality monitoring platform as a refinement of the existing ones. It also complies with nationally applicable standards.

The page displays data from 31 SPKU in Jakarta integrating data from DLH Jakarta's SPKU, the Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia and Vital Strategis.
