REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Due to its vast forest cover, Indonesia has an important role to play in handling climate change, stated the UK Foreign Secretary's Special Representative for Climate Change Sir David King.

"Indonesia is the most progressive among all developing countries, with regard to handling climate change," David King noted here on Friday.

King explained that Indonesia and the UK face similar problems due to climate change, which are floods. Floods cause a major impact on the economy of both Indonesia and the UK.

So, climate change is one of the major challenges faced by the world.

"All of us have a responsibility to handle climate change. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle wastes to handle the climate change," he emphasized.

David remarked that tackling climate change should be prioritized as it is forecast to have a major impact in future.

According to him, floods have been a real menace as a result of climate change. Climate change has caused the ice in the Arctic to melt, which has resulted in an increase in the sea levels.

"Every island faces the same menace, the rise in sea level. If the sea level is higher, it can result in inland flooding. London, for example, is bearing the brunt of floods due to water gushing in from the sea and also the river," he claimed.

To handle climate change, King has urged all countries having forest cover to adopt measures to prevent deforestation.

"Deforestation will accelerate climate change," he noted.
