Emperor Akihito interested in marine biota: Jokowi

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TOKYO -- Japanese Emperor Akihito has shown interest, particularly in marine biota, stated visiting Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"He indeed has special interest in ecology, particularly marine biota," Jokowi noted before paying a courtesy visit to Akihito, here, Monday.

Therefore, during the courtesy visit, he will discuss social issues of interest to the Japanese emperor.

Jokowi and First Lady Iriana Widodo arrived at the palace of the Japanese emperor on Monday, at 11 a.m. local time. They were greeted by the Japanese emperor and Empress Michiko at the palace.

"(I will talk) about culture and arts, too. There will be no serious talks such as on the economy, etc," he said.

On the occasion, Jokowi had the opportunity to see a koi fish pond at the emperor's palace.

Jokowi arrived at Tokyo's Haneda International Airport in Japan, at 9:49 p.m. local time, on Sunday.

Boarding the presidential aircraft, President Jokowi and his entourage departed from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at noon, on Sunday, to commence his state visit to Japan, China, and Malaysia.

On arrival at the Haneda airport, the president was greeted by Chief of Protocol of Japan June Yamakazi, Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Yusron Ihza Mahendra, Japan's Deputy Foreign Minister Takashi Uno, and Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Yazuaki Tanizaki.

During the visit to Japan, the Indonesian head of state is scheduled to meet Japanese Emperor Akihito and to attend a business forum with around one thousand Japanese businesspersons to step up cooperation in the field of economy.

President Jokowi will be in Japan on March 22-25, in China on March 26-27, and will return to Jakarta on March 28, 2015, with a stopover in Malaysia to attend the wedding party of a Malaysian official.

In China, President Jokowi will meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and will also attend a business forum with Chinese businesspersons.

During this overseas trip, the president is accompanied by First Lady Iriana Widodo, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi, Coordinating Minister for Economy Sofyan Djalil, Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel, TNI Chief General Moeldoko, Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto, and Capital Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Chief Franky Sibarani.
