REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEOUL – Indonesian mission in the second Nuclear Security Summit was to eradicate nuclear weapons in order that it would never fall into terrorists’ hands, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa, said on Monday.

“The main guarantee of nuclear safety is the eradication of nuclear weapons,” Natalegawa said, reported by Nasihin Masha from Republika.

The first Nuclear Security Summit was held in Washington on 2010 and hosted by US who invited the attendees directly. The three main missions of the summit is the non-proliferation efforts, nuclear disarmament, and nuclear for peace. 

“The first two missions should be consistent on countries’ right to use nuclear for peace,” Natalegawa added.

Indonesia is consistent for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation as the country is the head of Non-Aligned Movement(NAM) Working Group on Disarmament. To add more, last February Indonesia has also ratified the restriction on nuclear test. As the chairman of ASEAN, Indonesia is supported by the countries which have the ability to produce nuclear weapons to promote ASEAN nuclear-free zone.

On the summit Indonesia would suggest national legislation to emphasize the importance of nuclear safety legislation for all countries, Natalegawa said. The summit is also drafting Seoul Communique, which will outline the three principles of nuclear safety and consistent on the principle of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). After Japan earthquake that led to Fukushima nuclear power plant, two issues, which are nuclear security and nuclear safety, emerged.
