Tens of thousands workers flock to Jakarta on May Day

Tens of thousands worker flock MH Thamrin Street in Central Jakarta, to commemorate International Worker Day or May Day on Wednesday.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Tens of thousands workers flocked to the state palace to observe "May Day" on Wednesday. Representative of Indonesian Workers Labor Council, Andi Ghani said that the workers demanded seven points. Among others, they demanded government to implement the social security providers (BPJS) for all Indonesian people. Second, to solve problem of . 

Third, to set May 1 as a national holiday. "We want government to abolish outsourcing system, especially in state-owned enterprises, and cancel fuel price rise plan," Ghani said on Wednesday. 

Beside in the state palace, workers also rallied in front of some ministry buildings, including the inistry of Manpower and Transmigration, Minsitry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of State-owned Enterprises  and the Coordinating Ministry of Economy. But President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was not in Jakarta at the moment as he was scheduled to meet workers at PT Maspion Group in Surabaya, East Java.
