REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The development programs being implemented in Indonesia's border areas require the participation of all stakeholders, according to Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir.

"To develop the border regions, we must involve all stakeholders. The Indonesian government's representatives in the border regions are ready to work for the welfare of the community," Fachir noted in a press statement received by Antara here on Thursday.

The statement was delivered during a meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) for the Border Area Development Division James Budiono on July 1.

During the meeting, Budiono remarked that the condition in border areas was a matter of concern, and the government should immediately implement development programs.

"In the area directly adjacent to Malaysia, the people are highly dependent on Malaysia for the distribution of basic commodities and infrastructure, which has led the people of the community to use ringgit currency for their transactions," he explained.

The deputy minister welcomed Kadin's willingness to develop the economic potential in the border region in an effort to realize the development programs.

"Indonesia, in cooperation with Singapore, has successfully carried out development in border areas such as Karimun, Bintan and Batam," Fachir pointed out.

He added that economic development in the border areas can be realized through the mechanism of bilateral and regional cooperation.

In this regard, Fachir emphasized that sound connectivity should be established to ensure successful economic development in the border areas, which is also a major priority and part of the nine goals promoted by the government of President Joko Widodo.
